Alum Heather Lang’s Craft & Form Essay Published at Berfrois

A version of alum Heather Lang’s MFA Craft & Form Essay was published by Berfrois: The Sounds of Visual Orchestration: An Exploration of Fiona Sampson’s Common Prayer and Sarah Morgan’s Animal Ballistics. Heather studied under poet and mentor Kathleen Graber during her Craft & Form module.

Previously Heather presented this paper at the Midwest Graduate Student Conference on Writing at Southeast Missouri State University.

On Sampson, she writes:

It is almost as though these words are less controlled, are unraveling across the page, much like the “pallor” that “moves out from nose, cheekbones, forehead.” Much like an object appears smaller as it moves farther away, each line within this three-line stanza becomes smaller and smaller until the “pallor moves” away and “into the night.”

 
 
 
On Morgan, Heather writes:

The poet’s expertise in aligning the pieces of a poem is apparent from the start. What business do an umbrella and a train have flirting with each other? Morgan bonds the two together through her diction.

Heather Lang’s poetry has been published by or is forthcoming in Pleiades, december, Jelly Bucket, The Normal School online, and Whiskey Island among other publications. She serves as Associate Poetry Editor / Online Managing Editor for The Literary Review, as Co-Editor for Petite Hound Press, and as an adjunct professor. She earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Her chapbook manuscript was named a semifinalist in the 2014 Tupelo Press Snowbound Chapbook competition, her poetry has been twice nominated for Pushcart Prizes, and she was awarded the Murphy Writing of Stockton University Scholarship for their Spain 2015 program. Heather will serve as an AWP16 moderator/panelist.
